To distinguish the birth of Jesus, many folks and churches are erecting outdoor Nativity scenes. This great tradition dates all the way back to St. Francis of Assisi who was the first to depict the nativity scene. He wanted to strengthen and deepen people’s faith and worship in Jesus Christ. The nativity scene grew in popularity and spread and after several centuries, the nativity scene has become one of the most important and popular symbols of Christmas.

The typical nativity scene shows the holy family including baby Jesus in what looks like the barn stable or manger, with his mother Mary and father Joseph. In larger displays, other characters will be surrounding Jesus such as a shepherd, the Magi or 3 wise men and angels. The animals usually included in this scene include a camel, donkey, lamb and/or ox.

Many churches and religious places hold a living Nativity scene, but while that cannot be possible for all, the non-living nativity scene is commonplace. You can find these nativity sets from very tiny table top presentations all the way up to life size large nativity sets.

You can actually start a set with the bare minimum figures and then add pieces on later. You can find unique nativity sets in all types of different construction including wood, stone, marble, plastic and even inflatable figures. Depending on the material used, Christmas nativity sets can be made to look antique or modern. They can be as simple and plain all the way up to elaborate and hand painted. There are also Native American nativity sets, vintage nativity sets, Alaskan nativity sets. You can also purchase structures for the stable or manger that can protect your outdoor pieces from the weather. Some nativity sets are considered “live”, meaning they actually have people that stand in for each figure represented and they recreate the actual scene. This type of scene is usually well broadcasted for folks to come by and see and usually have hours in the evening when it is dark and they can light it up to make the scene look real, baby and all!

And don’t forget the most important part – the lights! This is a fantastic way to display your outdoor nativity set so it can easily be seen at night. You want to show your Christmas scene off, so make sure it’s visible for all to see.

The U.S. is not the only country to display nativity scenes at Christmas time. Around the world, other countries will depict the nativity scene characters a bit differently. For example, in Latin American countries like Brazil or Venezuela, Joseph and Mary are dressed similar to the local folks. Mary is dressed with a shawl and Joseph is wearing a poncho. Animals are also different and are usually native to that country.

The most important role of any nativity set is to remember the reason for the season, which is that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ along with love, peace and humility. Outdoor nativity sets are wonderful reminders of this special holiday. Any nativity scene that you set up depicting the holy family will be special.
